GARMENT PRODUCTION UNIT
Creating Livelihood Opportunities for Rural Women
In the rural village of Kalavasal, where economic hardship and unsafe labor often define women’s livelihoods, The Sivakasi Don Bosco Society, through its centre at Don Bosco Vidivelli, is pioneering a bold initiative: the Income Generation Production Unit and Pop-up Store. Rooted in the values of empowerment and sustainable development, this programme transforms skill training into tangible income opportunities for rural women—offering them a dignified path to financial independence.
Women who have successfully completed advanced tailoring training at the centre are employed in the unit, where they produce quality garments and eco-friendly bags. These handcrafted products are marketed and sold through a dedicated pop-up store at Vidivelli, providing a direct outlet for their work. To further expand reach and earnings, the initiative also taps into online platforms and leverages the support networks of Self-Help Group (SHG) members.

But the programme goes beyond production. It offers a comprehensive model that includes training in marketing, management, and entrepreneurship, equipping women not only with job skills but also with the confidence and capability to run their own businesses. This holistic approach ensures that they grow as independent entrepreneurs, not just wage earners.
All profits are thoughtfully reinvested into purchasing raw materials and expanding the unit’s operations—creating a self-sustaining model that continues to generate employment for more women in and around Kalavasal.
This initiative directly addresses a vital social challenge: offering women a safe, supportive, and growth-oriented alternative to hazardous employment in local industries. It also complements broader efforts in education, health, and community well-being, becoming a model of self-reliance, dignity, and transformation.
With every product crafted and sold, The Sivakasi Don Bosco Society furthers its mission to uplift women, strengthen families, and build empowered rural communities—one stitch at a time.
